The Maiorchino Tournament is much more than a simple event; it is the annual celebration of one of the oldest and most vibrant traditions in Novara di Sicilia. This unique manifestation, which takes place during a period embracing Carnival and Lent, attracts thousands of visitors every year, all curious to witness the crazy race of the Maiorchino cheese wheels along the steep streets of the historic center.

The Hero Cheese of Tradition

The undisputed protagonist of the festival is Maiorchino, a sheep and goat cheese with a hard, flavourful paste, produced exclusively in the area of the Peloritani and Nebrodi Mountains. Its aging process, which lasts up to 24 months, makes it robust and perfect for the rolling race.

Maiorchino is recognized as a traditional Italian agricultural food product (PAT) and is protected by a Consortium that guarantees its authenticity and artisanal processing, a true source of pride for Sicilian gastronomy.

The Race

The Maiorchino Tournament is a race of speed and dexterity with ancient origins, dating back at least to the seventeenth century.

• The Protagonists: Teams, made up of local maiorchinari (cheese players), compete with the goal of rolling the heavy cylindrical cheese wheels (which can weigh up to 18 kg) along a predetermined course.
• The Course: The race takes place along a narrow, downhill alley in the heart of Novara, where the cheese can reach impressive speeds.
• The “Lanza”: Players use a leather strap called the lanza to throw, steer, and control the direction of the wheel, preventing it from leaving the track.
• The Objective: The team that manages to complete the course in the fewest throws wins, combining strength, skill, and perfect knowledge of the terrain.

The competition is extremely engaging and full of folklore, featuring songs, betting, and the passionate encouragement of the crowd.

 When It Takes Place and What to See

The Tournament is traditionally held between the end of January and the beginning of Lent (often in February or March), coinciding with the Novarese Carnival.

• Tournament Period: Generally, the races take place on the Sundays and Shrove Tuesdays of Carnival.
• Other Events: The event is not just a race! It also includes tasting Maiorchino paired with baked ricotta and local wine, as well as the traditional schiticchiu (snack) and masked dances.
